The overwhelming majority of the recommendations I received were for Plyron. Having finally gotten the funding, our new Plyron floor has just been installed last week, and is about to be painted. So far everyone raves about it. One choreographer almost got on her knees to kiss the floor - so tired was she of splinters from the old deck. I was a trifle concerned about it's lack of resiliency, but she said it felt great under her feet. (I still expect to bring in a Marley for the occasional ballet.) The only problem seemed to be in obtaining the product. Our carpenter had to drive down to Brooklyn (over 300 miles) to get it, and they had problems providing enough Plyron to do the job. If anyone knows of a source (the more local the better to the Des Moines Iowa area the better) I wonder if you might post or e-mail the info directly. I really don't want to build these beasts (though I have the drawings to do so) and I can't afford the $2000 each purchase price for painted fiberglass ones that a web search turned up A little more info: I am looking for standing horses. The standers usually have two outside legs planted and the inside legs raised slightly. Since I don't plan on incorporating any up & down movement these will be more stable than the Jumping variety . I only need to raise and lower a section of the stage 3'-4' total travel distance. Thanks also to those who have recommended the various material handling manufacturers. I'll be looking into that route also. For academic purposes, if nothing else, I would still like to know how to design this type of mechanism. At one point we had eight. I know a few have been auctioned off by our fund raising folks. We are currently using one in our production of HAIR. Unfortunatly it has been re-painted in UV colors. I will look for the some photos I have and send them to you. BTW, Tim Burkhart a Simpson College Alum is frequent guest Sound Designer at our theater. You should drag your students to Omaha and see HAIR. Tim and I would be happy meet you and your students.
