I don't remember if anybody gave the exact reference to the FCCs rules/regs. Apologies if they did already. I was asked by the head office to measure the distance from the balcony to the pulpit last week. Being curious and suspicious, I asked why? Seems that a funeral home was going to bring in cellular blocking transmitters for a memorial service to prevent cell phones from ringing. And they were figuring the coverage area. Trying to explain that was illegal didn't seem to impress the powers at the church. After all, they argued, the funeral home says its okay. Only after I gave them the FCC code section did they change their mind. I'm as annoyed by the interruption in performances, services and concerts as anybody else, but that's not good enough reason to violate federal law. In addition to criminal penalties, civil suits could arise from missed calls caused by the jamming devices. Passive blocking - another story. Alf http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/cellular/operations/blockingjamming.html [Quote] "The operation of transmitters designed to jam or block wireless communications is a violation of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended ("Act"). See 47 U.S.C. Sections 301, 302a, 333. The Act prohibits any person from willfully or maliciously interfering with the radio communications of any station licensed or authorized under the Act or operated by the U.S. government. 47 U.S.C. Section 333. The manufacture, importation, sale or offer for sale, including advertising, of devices designed to block or jam wireless transmissions is prohibited. 47 U.S.C. Section 302a(b). Parties in violation of these provisions may be subject to the penalties set out in 47 U.S.C. Sections 501-510. Fines for a first offense can range as high as $11,000 for each violation or imprisonment for up to one year, and the device used may also be seized and forfeited to the U.S. government." ------------------------------ Message-ID: <010b01c4ba9a$02c23b30$4b01010a [at] schulershook.net> From: "Bill Conner" Subject: RE: Fire on Stage Date: Mon, 25 Oct 2004 08:53:30 -0500 Steve - it rained like crazy for first 24 hours so I could relax. I've implied the same point a few times before but in a much less eloquent fashion. What the solution is is beyond me outside of unionizing the organization? (I am speaking of non union shops of course.) Some of the problems: The people working backstage on a salary are basically treated as "the help" by the front of house. The front of house working 10 - 5, while the backstage works 9a - 10p for less money. Stage technicians are so happy to have a job in theatre they will work for small salaries. Where else will they be able to do the type of work they are doing in theatre? Front of house people know this and take advantage of the technician's love of their craft. The front of house seeing little production difference between "Waiting for Godot" and "Titanic", except one has music. The front of house ignoring the problems the technicians encounter, relying on the proven ingenuity to solve or bypass them without additional resources. I could go on... but I'm getting all upset which is not a good way to start the damn day. I think I was the one response to this initial post. My two line post really wasn't meant to disparrage you, Davin. It honestly was a joke.. a poor one, admittedly. I've corresponded a bit with Fred, and just bounced a note back. I am sorry for the consternation that post caused. Davin, I don't know you personally. A lot of people in our line of work are aware of people's reputations, though, and I am aware of yours. I believe I sent you some lamps for old worklights... I have nothing against you or the Overture Center, and hold you in high regard because of your personal and professional reputation. I can and do say the same thing about Fred. Now that I have all the facts regarding the accident, the joke wasn't only lousy, it completely missed the mark. Oh, well. Unfortunately it isn't the first time for me :-( Training of underpaid Rep help aside, whatever happened to common sense? That is the thing that struck me when I made that post. Even if one hadn't been trained thus: "Do not put towels around the legs of an A-frame ladder, do not push it on said towels over a slippery surface and do not allow the spotter to walk away" why would one do that? (I am speaking of non union > shops of course.) I'd have to ask why limit this comment to non-union shops? It reveals obvious untrue assumptions; Union members also often barely make a living wage, and "suffer" just as much for their art as any of us. Union members (of which I am one- in two different unions...) by far work just as hard and are just as invested in the final product as any non-union house. And no more of them drive BMW's and dress up any better than stagehands in other situations. Being a member of the union does not guarentee anybody a paycheck or a living wage- granted that they try to get their members closer than in non-union situations. I just hate to see such blanket assumptions that are not true perpetuated. gregg _____________________ gregg hillmar scenic & lighting design portfolio & life as we know it: http://www.hillmardesign.com "Work like you don't need the money.
