Cheeseborough some pipe up above the grid that will keep the fresnels above grid level, but focused through the grid onto the audience. Or just hang them as part of the plot. Alternatively, S4 Pars w. frost, lamped at 375 would be good. Since you already have emergency lighting taken care of, house lighting needn't be any more complicated than this. I'd prefer to be able to project it as a gobo. I work regularly with a team that does Internet 2 collaborative projects. A usual part of the spectacle is 1 to 5 cameras of the performance, run through Jitter effects, mixed live, and broadcast to any mix of our 3 screens or the other spaces' screens. Given some experimentation and a modicum of planning, the results can be quite stunning. I added the proper connecter for working in the theatrical lighting and reversed the handle to be able to hang it from our lighting truss/pipes. In all it was a heck of a lot cheaper than buying new 6" fresnels or using part of our original lighting inventory. Our black box at the time was 33'W by 60'L. I used 9 of the work lights which were also dimmable to cover 2/3 of the space for audience. Simply add another 3 to cover the other 3rd of the space when the audience seating and platforms were removed for using the entire space as a workshop for kids. Once I also wired some gel in front of them and used them on our movie screen as cyc lights. We were originally planning on re-using the old house lighting (which were just old factory pendant lights, because the space used to be a factory), but it looks like they were more damaged then we originally thought. It may be easiest just to look at new houselights rather then refurb things that weren't ideal in the first place. So... if the big factor was budget, what would you use to light a 35' x 35' black box space, 18 feet tall, grid about 16'. The building will be black inside, if that makes a different (I just primed the wall - sort of amusing having a 'white box space', but that'll change) Our requirements are basically just being dimmable and capable of lighting the space. We'd like to run them using a channel from our dimmer pack (1 of 24), controlled by the lighting board (Ideally, we'd have a remote switch near a door, but budget prevents that from happening right away). Ideally, they would be mountable at grid height or just above, so we don't have to dodge them with our scaffolding when we're hanging lights. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has any donations or hints at grants or other money sources, too, even more so (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) - we can do Canadian tax receipts, heck, we'll name the theatre after you if you donate enough - we're not proud :) Thanks very much Chris ------------------------------ Message-Id: <3.0.6.32.20050801091511.007fbc00 [at] mail.interlog.com> Date: Mon, 01 Aug 2005 09:15:11 -0400 From: Villem Teder Subject: Re: RGB lighting At 03:01 AM 8/1/05 -0700, you wrote: > >Found distributor, but without some MAJOR funding, I can't make it happen, >the DLP chips, including the DMD and drivers are 2700-6000 dollars a set! >Might have to put that one aside for a while. > >Chris > Chris: Several thoughts. Have a look at Laser Surplus Sales (www.lasersurplus.com) in their optics section, near the bottom. They list an assortment of modules and components from DLP projectors. Perhaps something there might be what you are looking for? Another possible source for parts is broken DLP projectors. I recently bought one on EBay, just to take apart someday to see what's inside. (Paid more for shipping to Canada than the actual unit, but that seems to happen a lot on EBay for me.) I'll probably get around to taking it apart soon, as it is becoming more of trip hazard than a door stop. Would any interesting bits be of any use when I'm done dissecting? The lines were recorded into a .wav file on a laptop and played back through WM with the full-screen visualization on; we had to build a small shutter to sit in front of the projector until it was time to go. The main issue we faced (and I apologize, but I don't recall how or even if we dealt with this) was the fact that we couldn't get a consistent "look" from performance to performance. There's enough random fluctuation built into the code that the visualizer wouldn't spit out the same effects each time. We didn't have the time at the time to really look long and hard at solutions, though a second computer would probably be needed to capture a few different trials (with what software, I don't know) to pick the one you like best... Dunno about the legality, though. That particular effect was one I didn't have much involvement with. ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20050801143411.30948.qmail [at] web20821.mail.yahoo.com> Date: Mon, 1 Aug 2005 07:34:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Steven Hood Subject: Re: poor flooring job In-Reply-To: Make 'em re-do it. Has anyone tried capturing their digital lighting designs with RAW or TIFF image format? On the Nikon D70 and D100 (and possibly the new D50 as well) the raw data format is 12 bits per pixel. If the JPG format only supports 8-bit (I'm pretty sure this is the case), you lose depth when the camera compresses the image. Do the Rebel cameras have the RAW option as well? Is the native resolution of the CCD higher than 8 bits per pixel? I'm going to be experimenting with RAW format on my D100 in the coming week. With those extra 4 bits (conceivably 16 times more depth) it should be a lot closer to the dynamic range of film. The trade-off is that a 256MB flash card will only store 24 RAW images or 13 TIFF images, compared to 142 with normal JPG compression. All of these options are at full 6-megapixel resolution. On the old digital rebel if you shoot in RAW it also saves a medium size JPG. I think the cameras higher on the food chain allow you to store both a large JPG and the raw file simultaneously. Seems like the best of both worlds if you have plenty of storage space. Rumor has it that you can find hacked firmware for the cheaper rebel to unlock the large/raw combo but I'm a long way from the JPEG compression limiting the quality of my photographs so I stick with what canon gave me. I think RAW Canon photos are 12 bit as well but they have to be converted to either 8 or 16 when you process them in the computer. -Tom Cc: 'Kyle Schoenfeld' Do the Rebel cameras have the RAW option as well?
