I highly doubt that there is any "image" projected onto the lens. You can prove this for yourself by putting a transparent piece of paper (with an arrow or other symbol drawn on it) in the gobo slot. Remove the lamp and reflector, use a 3.5Q if you have one - as it makes the task trivial. Place a regular light bulb inside the instrument and block stray light. Project the dim image in a dark room and observe the effect. Try a shutter and see what happens. Dim red light does not destroy dark adaptation. However, if they were bright enough and aimed at the audience, they would act as blinders. Unfortunately, it would also reduce the perceived brightness of the UV effect.
