To get lighting that's _exactly_ right, that exists as an element of the production, not just "light to get by with." And, of course, from an industry standpoint, a technician (I'm one of 'em) gets paid at a far lower rate than a designer (of which I'm also one), because their expected workloads are much different. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Huh? Unless you're designing industrials, stagehands always make more money than designers, whether overall or on an hourly basis. Take your average design fee, deduct your expenses from it, then divide the result by the number of hours spent working on the show, and you'll find that stagehands wind up doing much better. The only time designers do well is when they design a show that's a hit and get AWC ("additional weekly compensation") for years afterward. Ask anyone who's designed on Broadway or for LORT. - John McKernon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Jun 2006 10:08:37 -0400 Subject: Re: effect of new technology From: Herrick Goldman Message-ID: In-Reply-To: I second that. Having just come off two large events where I got a flat rate design fee (pretty large) but My programmer, M.E., and indeed my associate who also became an hourly Electrics Head made more than I did. I still ended up using a wrench and climbing truss, as well as 2 18 hour days in a row. But in the end I got to stand back and say "I did that" and take pictures for my portfolio , and have the client say they would call me again. One disadvantage of a shop floor made of wood: it tends to warp severely when one breaks off a fire sprinkler and drains the entire contents of the fire suppression system above the shop (second floor offices, the grid, etc.) on to it, not to mention being unable to shut the system off because the valve is located in the costume laundry room, which was padlocked closed to keep actors from doing personal laundry. Judy, We used to do that without knowing it. I started out in this business as a dancer in '58. I was with a company whose rehearsal space was a concrete floor. Blew my knees out by '61 but we didn't know why .... then. But it was too late, I was already addicted to THEATRE as a way of life. I was always interested in the how and why of the tech part of the equation and that became the way I would find fulfillment in this incredible thing we call theatre.
