I have been looking at hotels in Mid-town East and the nice ones seem to run $300+ per night. We plan to be there for four nights. We are considering staying outside of NYC and taking the train in/out each day (which someone recently suggested to me as the best thing to do) if we find a place that is convienent. What do you think? Anybody have suggentions on places to stay (either in the city out outside)? Thanks. -Delbert -- Delbert L. Many people stay (I know, because I see them on the bus all the time) in Secaucus, NJ. There's a train connection, but buses run more often and are less expensive -- on an average, there's a bus every 20 minutes and it's only $2.30 each way. Depending on time of day, it takes from 12-45 minutes to get into midtown -- usually, it's right at 20 minutes. When leaving the city, the view of the Manhattan skyline just after you come out of the tunnel is wonderful. Feel free to contact me off list. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2006 16:37:34 -0400 Subject: Re: NYC Trip From: Bill Sapsis Message-ID: In-Reply-To: $300+ is pretty much the norm. It's high season in the city and most of the hotels are booked solid. They know they have a lock so they charge the highest rate they can. Keep in mind that the quality of the hotels drop off pretty quickly once you cross the river. That being said, I'm relatively certain they all have indoor plumbing, phones and a TV. The cost of the train both ways plus a taxi several nights for when you want to get back to the hotel but the train or bus schedules don't line up and you're too tired to wait another hour will also impact on the budget. And even though the hotels in Jersey are cheaper, they aren't that much cheaper. If it were me, I'd bite the bullet. Staying in mid-town and being able to walk back to your hotel outweighs the cost savings. I just stayed 4 nights in London and chose a hotel that was right downtown, next door to the "EYE". It was a bit more expensive than the ones further out but it was most definitely worth it. Being able to walk back, especially over the Westminster Bridge, at 2 am was worth the extra expense. Have you tried ? They just took over the reservation company we always used (we're in the city a lot) and they always gave us good service. Haven't dealt with the new company yet but I'm told it's all the same people. Zat help? Near Piccadilly or Trafalgar or the West End, yes, or even the City, but not across the river. As for midtown Manhattan, I have enjoyed the Broadway Inn on 46th near 8th. A European style Bed and Breakfast with super service. It's very small so may be tough to get reservations. It's prices are less than the big hotels but only relative to Manhattan. Besides, you meet an interesting class of people in the PABT. Like me, = fer instance. Don't get me wrong; I agree that to truly get the "New York" experience, Delbert should stay in Manhattan; my only point is that if midtown (or = the upper east or west sides, or, I suppose, downtown) is not an option, Secaucus is cheaper, faster, and more convenient than the outer boroughs = (or even far uptown Manhattan). ------------------------------ Message-ID: Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2006 21:02:16 -0400 From: "Ken Romaine" Cc: delbert.hall [at] gmail.com (Delbert Hall) Subject: Re: NYC Trip In-Reply-To: References: Delbert: I haven't stayed there, but one of Barco's Belgians (we have many) has, and said it was OK. http://www.chelseainn.com/ It's on 17th St between 5th & 6th.
