Oh, yeah. My ISP's spam trap catches a lot of it, but a lot still gets through. What I get appears to the spam filter to have real names and real subject headers, and, unfortunately, a lot of the content looks legit. The spammers, as always, are a couple of steps ahead of the anti-spam efforts. The new wave of this stuff is annoying, because there have been numerous occasions on which I've had to go into the spam trap and rescue posts from both Stagecraft and Theatre Sound. These are times when I curse the people who open anything in their mailboxes and who bite on any jazzy bait that comes their way. If the spam weren't profitable, there wouldn't be spam. But why am I wasting time saying this? We all knew that anyway. -- JLB ------------------------------ Message-ID: <8231e7ea0608080617n76937016k5b186080a39d8a11 [at] mail.gmail.com> Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2006 09:17:57 -0400 From: SS Subject: Foley Artists This was posted on the Sound Listserve. My viewpoint might be different if blackouts, brownouts and sags/spikes were common here. But in all my time in working two theatres, I can only recall one instance where power failed during a performance - and that was for an extended period. We probably should get the boards on UPS systems, but have not seen the need. I don't know if all dimmer racks boot up fast or not. But most venues are not going to be able to have UPS power on the racks, so the stage lighting is going to go out - even if the light board remains up. I know the ones you mean, but my spam detector catches them. It's called popfile and it's free/open source. http://popfile.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl It works great! The only drawback is that it does not delete/mark spams on the email server. So you still have to take the time to download/retrieve those hundreds of emails; however, it puts them in your smambox instead of your inbox. Nathan -- Look Solutions USA, Ltd. Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2006 14:52:59 -0500 Message-ID: In-Reply-To: I have worked on a few systems where a simple solution was used to momentartily keep the emergency lights on when normal power is restored to the building. A timer was put in-line with the sense feed to the transfer panel. A simple dial set the time delay in seconds or minutes (depending on the position of a switch on the timer). When power was restored, the timer waited the set amount of time before closing the circuit and restoring power to the transfer panel. This delay can be set for the normal reboot time of the DMX controller or dimmer rack electronics, whichever takes longer... (With some of the stuff the new Sensor+ and C21 dimmer racks can do, they take longer to boot than their predecessors.) The same theory with the timer can be used for battery-powered emergency lights (i.e. Bug Eyes), but the power draw may require the timer to drive a contactor that would supply the bug-eyes. Of course, check with your local engineers / AHJ to make sure that these timers will not violate local codes. When the spammers see your system kicks them off, word gets around and the number of attempts goes down. When we first implemented the RBLs, our server was rejecting a connection every second or so.
