I don't prefer this sort of arrangement at all (though it is nice to be able to have that sort of solitude which allows me to sing along with whatever music I happen to be working to as loud as I'd like without annoying those in the room with me!), but in this day and age of "doing more with less"--especially when it comes to budgets--any repeated complaining I do about having to hire another body "just in case" is liable to fall on deaf ears. No, it's not the ideal situation. Yes, it is potentially wrought with danger. But it's not going to change satisfactorily any time soon, and while I enjoy tilting at windmills on occasion, I have neither the time nor the energy to continue beating my head against this particular wall...and neither, I suspect, do most of the other people who find themselves in these situations. We have to pick our spots and attempt to change this sort of culture when circumstances are going to allow for a greater-than-snowball's-chance of success. > Please play/work safely! Check out the Yale Tech Brief number 1287 from October 1986, and the instructions for building a frameless turntable. Most of the injuries I have seen or experienced have been because more labor was needed to do the job safely. I have also been in situations when a "bean counter" wanted me to do something dangerous and I have asked them to be my "Spotter". By doing this, my hope is that they will either get enough of the "willies" to get the extra help needed, as well as gain a better understanding of just how dangerous our work can be. Drag those check writers away from their desk to the front lines, it might help clean the wax from their deaf ears. ===== Brian Rice b_ricie [at] yahoo.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The thread was discussing budgets and I made a claim that I was going to try my best to come in under budget for "Metamorphoses". I am just speaking of scenic budget. Well folks I just barely missed. The total scenic budget was $1000.00 and we came in at $1040.00. What we got for that money was a pool that was 18'long by 10' wide and 2' deep. The water was filtered and heated to 80 degrees. The pool also had a back stage entrance to the pool as well as all the other tricks that the show called for. As a school with little money we had to exploit all our resources, and my mantra became "everything is a resource." The added joy I received from the project was watching the inventiveness of the students grow and rise to the challenge of doing the most with the smallest cost. ===== Brian Rice b_ricie [at] yahoo.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I think it's part of a general trend where yesterday's conveniences allow people to modify their work patterns in such a way that the convenience is necessary for the new pattern to function...go back to the older patterns, and it'd revert to the level of "convenience". Once you find a way to apply technology in such a way as to make possible what wasn't possible before, the convenience aspect disappears. The convenience of accurate, pre-recorded lighting cues that was afforded us with the advent of computerized LX boards is a necessity now; can you imagine trying to go back to doing shows with today's requirements on a 2-scene preset? This scenario isn't much different... > What would you have done twenty years ago in similar circumstances? I wouldn't have been caught dead in a grid, as I was a lot more fearful of heights and not even in high school yet! But seriously...I don't know. That's a pondering for another day... You told us 18'-0" dia., now some quick questions back at'cha. How High? What kind of power, manual, motor? Will the edge/face be in view or will there be a full surround? Time, how long to build? Crew, how many, what skill level? Budget for materials, how much? Is this a build it in place, or build it in the shop and move it in sections to the stage? Will it be built from scratch or must you use stock platforms for as much as possible? Answer those questions and we will be able to be more specific in our answers. However. here are a couple of quick suggestions. I am guessing by your signature and questions, that you have little or no experience in building revolves so my answers are based on that premise. First do NOT use swivel casters, straight line only. Second, consider using the inverted caster method, i.e. casters bolted to the floor or to a plywood deck set on the floor rather than bolted to the under side of the turntable. This is quieter and dirt, debris etc. on the floor do not cause bumps and rumble, and you can compensate for an uneven stage floor. Do you have access to the Yale Tech Briefs, The text book Scene Design and Stage Lighting? These have some excellent pictures and descriptions of turntables of several types. Quite often, products found here in the US are manufactured in countries who are basically ripping off American designs, with little concern for quality of materials, or workmanship. If possible, don't buy anything from China or Tiawan, either. Wal-Mart is definitely a monster for moving into an area, and pushing dozens of small mom & pop business into failure. They buy in such huge quantities, and as such can get such a volume price break, that there is no way a small business can compete. They are like the Borg, "You will be assimilated, resistance is futile." They show up, build a bland-looking cube, and begin taking over the populace. Every time one of their superstores opens, the world becomes a little more conformist, a little less interesting. Maybe they aren't like the Borg after all.... maybe they are more like the "It" brain from the book "A Wrinkle in Time." Dont alot of large US companies manufacturer their product in China and Tiwan at a lower price per unit, and a lower wage ? A prime example of this would be Nike.
