It was way too expensive. We ended up putting 2 selecon zoom fixtures in a tree DS of the cyc and using a glass gobo. It was gorgeous. one light with the moon gobo was light orange (harvest) the other was just the same size circle slightly fuzzed with a blood red gel. the 2 blended beautifully. Pics are on my website under Batboy. The Selecons gave me an appx. 14' moon. YMMV. I have placed the sesults on the following page: http://www.artslynx.org/theatre/techstats.htm It's not formatted wonderfully as I hope that once the Republican Convention gets closer you will help me to fill in the blanks there as well. So as you discover names and "stuff" either send to me off-list or post to the list with CONVENTIONS somewhere in the heading. I still have not herd from anyone about names of stage managers or of the Dem's on microphone announcer. Her name sounds very familier. All of these people, designers and tech, do astonishing work. It is a shame they remain so uncredited. My goal is to rectify this....with your help. By the way, as they come into my hands, I can also post some of the fun PR type tech lists from the big nationsl tours (ie how many trucks such and such took). It is certainly a fun way to demonstrate to students that these shows are not just about acting (except in the case of the conventions where I guess it IS just about acting ) Hey! The projection work at the Dem Convention was quite good. It is so hard to match multiple RP projections so well on live TV. I was impressed. I have the stats on the screens but nothing on the people who did it and the specs of the projectors. So if any of you come by that lets add it in. Thanks all again. For info, archives & UNSUBSCRIBE, see --------------------------------------------------- Hi everybody: I have a show with a moon box, about 5 feet in diameter, about 5 or 6" deep, with a perspex cover. It has to shine white and then turn red. We lined the circumference with bulbs, base on the edge and pointing inward. That works ok for the white circuit(sort of),but for the red, where the lamps are weaker, we can't get an even glow. We tried all kinds of different incandescent lamps, from the simplest to various reflector lamps as high as 80W, and we keep getting spotty results. We don't have enough budget for neon, which would be ideal, or for fluorescents which would necessitate a special dimming circuit. Any ideas? It's pretty urgent, so if you think of something and want to email me directly that would be great. Thanks Judy Hi I produced an 8 foot diameter moon for a show last year. It consisted of a ply circle with 9inch high ply wall. Base covered in crumpled foil and lit with white LED's. 2 layers of frost then covered with a translucent fabric stretched over sides using a ring of ply to tighten down (like a drum skin). Then air brushed on moon map. See http://www.p.lunnon.dsl.pipex.com/circus.shtml I know that this is only one colour but the effect was stunning. Brumm, General Manager When I did this about two years ago I got a MOTU 828 with Digital Performer. The unit is attached to a Mac computer we had. Digital Performer is the software. The Mac had a burner already. The 828 has 8 inputs. Therefore I use 8 tracks in Digital Performer, although DP has much more capability than that. I am planning on getting another 828 so I can record 16 tracks if need be. I had a bad experience with Pro Tools, so I was specifically looking to avoid Digidesign. I know Digidesign is very popular, but that didn't really matter to me. If you want an all in one unit (no external computer) you could look at some of the digital 8 track recorders from Fostex, Tascam and the like. I am pretty sure you can have 8 tracks for less than $2,000. Since I had the computer, though, the little MOTU system I got was well under $2,000. It's a term that gets applied to a lot of different things. Some questions: -Do you want to mix your 16 inputs into 16 different outputs or do you just want switching capability (like an automated patchbay)? -If you need mixing, do you need physical knobs for each channel or can you use a menu structure/computer control? -Do you want live control over each mix/switch or do you just need to recall presets? -Are captive screw terminals okay for the audio connections or do you need XLR or 1/4" connectors? If you're looking for something like a standalone matrix from a mixing console I'm not aware of anything that is 16x16. You could look at the Midas XL88 (8x8) or the Crest X-Matrix (12x2 1RU units so you could assemble a 12x16.) If computer control or preset recall is acceptable, there are tons of rack mount boxes that will switch or mix 16x16. Off the top of my head you could look at Intelix, Lectrosonics, Peavey AA, Extron, Kramer, and Rane. With answers to the above questions I could probably steer you to a more specific product. -Michael Feinberg, CTS ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Aug 2004 21:55:03 +0100 (BST) From: Charlie Richmond Subject: Re: Advice/reccomandations please... I always knew the garment that bears his name had been invented for his trapeze act. I only later learned that he invented the trapeze act as a circus act too, and that both made their debut on the same day. Mr. Leotard was also THE "man on the flying trapeze". Of course his "Leotard" has not much resemblance to today's. If you look him up, they NEVER give a date of birth and very rarely a date of death, but rather only the date of his act's (and costume's) debut. What would be really great to learn would be who actually designed and made the costume. History has given him the credit but I am suspicious. My own guess instinct was that he was the first to WEAR a "Leotard" which was made for him by someone else. If my instinct is right I'd love someday to give the correct credit. Alas pop history is always sloppy in these things in crediting invention. The one that bothers me the most in theatre has been the claim that Fresnel invented the Fresnel lens (Ironically Fresnel did seem to invent the black riser variety as used in the ol' "stepped lens" stage lights, but we all know the risers in theatre "Fresnel" units do NOT feature black risers). By the way, the lenses got named after him because at the time he was the beaurocrat in France that mandated that all lighthouses had to use the lenses (an improvement to be sure) so they became Fresnel's lenses. The educational price is very good and John will allow you to upgrade to a full license when it expires. Steve L. There are the 8 analog inputs on the back (line level, TRS connectors) that Shawn is referring to, plus 2 TRS/XLR combos on the front with preamps/phantom. If 10 inputs isn't enough, there is also an ADAT input where you can add another 8 through a unit like a B*hringer ADA8000. After that, there are two SPDIF inputs I believe as well, I think. The total comes to either 20 or 22. I don't know how much of this is new in the MkII version of the 828. Maybe the old version didn't have all the optical/digital inputs. I've personally used my 828MkII for a fair amount of live recording and it has performed well. I've only done 10 tracks simultaneously so far (I don't own an external ADC) but I'm pretty sure my PowerBook could handle 20 with a fast external hard drive, at least at 44KHz. If you don't have a Mac, or are looking for something cheaper, you can also check out the MBox, by Digidesign. It's around $450 and has 4 inputs I think, and comes with Pro Tools which is one of the industry standards. As for standalone units with CDR, I don't have too many ideas. I think, though, that these days, most operators feel more comfortable on software on a PC/Mac rather than navigating through a lot of menus on a standalone unit. Hope that helps. -Todd ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Aug 2004 17:33:24 -0400 Subject: Re: Lightwright layout From: John McKernon Message-ID: In-Reply-To: > The educational price is very good and John will allow you to upgrade to a > full license when it expires. Okay Jon, You are now responsible for the lemonade that is dripping down my laptop screen! Thanks for that ROFLMAO moment. Frank, The Best Boy is the assistant to the Gaffer on a film. They handle the electric and lighting work on a film. Who knows where the term originated, sometime back in the early days of film, possibly even pre-California. Now, who wants to tackle MOS on the film clappers that indicates no sound? Here is the definition for Best Boy from the IMDb (Internet Movie Database) http://us.imdb.com/Glossary/ Best Boy AKA: Assistant Chief Lighting Technician, Best Boy Grip, Best Boy Electric The chief assistant, usually of the gaffer, but more often lately used as a general term for the second in command of a group. This term is likely borrowed from early sailing and whaling crews, as sailors were often employed to set up and work rigging in theatres. There are no "best girls" per se; female chief assistants are also called "Best Boys". The federal accreditation is, however, in the pipeline and expected to come though soon (ie the next couple of years). I think your plan is basically good, Matt. What I don't get is why you think that union membership and college are somehow exclusive or redundant. You can pursue union membership and a sound (or whatever) career without a degree, of course, but it is hardly unusual to follow the path you outline either. Many many union members are also college graduates. It sounds as if you are responding to stereotypes that aren't necessarily true.
