I would think if you had the money >for the good dimmable balasts you would have enough for neon but never >working with it can you get a true fade from neon? > Neon works fine with ordinary dimmers, I've done that a lot - both with the neon-sign type which require high voltage transformers, and with the tiny bulbs that used to be used as indicators before leds came in. I don't know why it works though when fluorescents don't, since I gather the principle behind any discharge lamp is the same. Anybody out there know why? I thought it might be becauseof the high operating voltage, but the tiny indicator lamps didn't have that. I used dimmable fluorescents a few times, in a couple of operas and recently in a play. The ones I used are built by a local lighting supplier. No winking, the fade up and down was just fine. A bit more of a problem getting a true graduation of intensity around the middle. One ballast costs around 100 dollars here and will support 56 watts of lamps. Neon costs a lot more. Maybe in the US it's different. ------------------------------ Message-ID: <4114BE92.3010205 [at] post.tau.ac.il> Date: Sat, 07 Aug 2004 13:35:46 +0200 From: Judy Cc: tiptd [at] theatreinthepark.com Subject: moon drops (as in tears) > > > >They used a large papier-mache moon that was >convex on the front side. (many folks don't know this. The LA Olympics alone had about 1m,000 theatrical performers employed). And where there are actors especially there are loads of crew and designers! So let this be a reminder to this wonderful list consituency to send me details (off-line is best) of statistics and names relating to the design tech and stistics related to the theatrical side of this years olympics. Also I only have the bare minimum of credits (producers and Lighting designer) so far for the upcoming Republican convention And for the Dem convention I am still looking for names of stage managers, on-mic announcer, and details on the projectors used for the 90' screen. Send if you have info! Meanwhile on the page I have started to track thse things at http://www.artslynx.org/theatre/techstats.htm I have added the PR stats that I had on file for the "A" company tours of Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard. If you have other such PR sheets in your files do send. I think it is of value to have these all in one place as a reference. Since I am updating the online page, replies to this note can come off-line to save bandwidth. I'd always assumed that Gaffer as a job title was an extention this meaning, the Gaffer being an "Old Man" of a crew, i.e. in charge because he's the senior hand with most experience. This would be consistant with the Best Boy being the Senior's most skilled assistant. -- Mick Alderson TD, Fredric March Theatre University of Wis. Our registration is up, and we are looking around to make sure that we're doing this correctly. We have a bare budget, and a clientel that isn't very wired (so the board is unwilling to spend much on hosting services.) Anybody got any suggestions for a cheap, reasonable but decent service level option? Thanks! Aztec High School Heat and plenty of ventilation. That will accelerate the outgassing of the nasties from the paint. Do be aware that the spoiled paint may have been compromised, so will not last. Plan on having to strip and repaint the rooms if you spot the paint peeling. Spraying the walls down with a bacteriostatic solution may also be indicated. --Dale ------------------------------ End of Stagecraft Digest #95 ****************************
