They run the gamut from one that looks like it's never been used to a couple that are getting rusty and bent - however, they're all usable. Anyone who is interested in them and is willing to reimburse the cost of shipping (or is looking for a very flimsy excuse for road trip to Cape Cod) can have them - first come, first served. I hate to see them end up in the dumpster if they can find a good home. As things heat up toward the US presidential election, it would be a blessing if the stagecraft list could remain an oasis of, well, not calm, but at least on-topic theatrical talk and related banter. I don't know about anybody else, but I run into enough political ranting in the rest of my life, on the 'Net and off. I'd like to have at least one set of e-mail I can open without bracing myself for that particular brand of ugliness. -- Pat Kight Albany (Ore.) I'd like to remind people of another material: wood. I've always found it easier to get 1X3 than 6" aluminum irrigation tube. Easier to carry, too. Using four lengths of 1X3, it's fairly easy to make an octagonal bottom tube, 6" across from flat to flat. It's not necessary for the bottom tube on an olio to be perfectly round, and it's not necessary for each side of the octagonal tube to be solid, hence the four lengths of 1X3 rather than eight. Also, leaving every other face open makes it easy to fabricate the bottom tube in sections and then bolt or screw them together. The bottom tube doesn't have to be strong as a beam, because the drop supports it along its length, but it does have to resist torque. I once made a round tube by using lots of little strips of wood, as suggested by a classic stagecraft text. It didn't work because the thing would twist. That resulted in the sides of the drop winding up while the center of the drop didn't. It looked like a big, saggy weenie in a bag. Since then, I've always made the bottom tube as an octagon out of 1X3, and it's worked every time. Wood is good! (Although applying flame retardant to it can be a pain.) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <411A3C26.9060001 [at] ix.netcom.com> Date: Wed, 11 Aug 2004 08:32:54 -0700 From: Michael Millar Cc: dougandlori [at] knology.net Subject: RE: MADE IN MEXICO References: In-Reply-To: Oh, the ignorance and stupidity.
