i 've taped most of the summer and winter opening and closing ceremonies for 
the last 12 - 16 years, ,this opening ceremonies I didn't get to tape, perhaps 
due to the fact of that storm thing called Charley. I did see them, but 
didn't get to tape them.

My wife thinks I'm nuts for taping all these things.  I am glad to hear so
many people were interested in the opening ceremonies.  I find that it is
so educational to watch these "budget is no factor" shows.  I mentioned to
a few grads that they should watch it and they said they would be busy
tossing back a few drinks instead.  I wish they realized the value of
experiencing these events.  They could have drank AND watched ;-).

I started off hand drafting as well.  The most important thing that I see=
 in having students still learn to hand draft is that it gives them a=
 better grasp of the fundamentals such as scale and layout.

The front or back of what?

My description was of the building of a "moon box" which is traditionally
the device one uses when the design "the moon" as part of the scenery.  It
is usually used behind a scrim and the illuminated opening faces the
audience.

As a side note, I have used Spackle (or similar) on the interior lit surface
to make "mountains and craters".  Helps add some shape when the box is used
close to the audience.

disagree with is that EVERYTHING must be dimensioned and that NO ONE should

Remind me never to hire them. Priorities aren't in order. 

They could have found a bar that was showing the ceremonies and done both at 
the same time. And if they were REALLY thinking, they could have devised some 
bar bets with their non-stagecraft buddies over the theatrial elements in the 
show (How DO they do that?) and drunk free all night.

Hi Folks - I just got back from two weeks in London.  Many thanks to
Charlie Richmond and his wife for taking me to Charles Darwin's house in
Downe and out to dinner.  Charlie was a great tour guide and we got to a
lot of great places, including spending three hours at Stage
Technologies.  

Keith - glad to hear that you are OK.  My wife recorded the opening
ceremonies of the Olympics for me.  I hope to watch them tonight.  If
you want a copy - let me know.  Also, Tracy and I will be down next
month to do the rigging work for Chuck Bowen.  Last I heard Tracy was
still trying to contact Chuck for some info.

Someone from the IOC contacted me two years ago about the flying for the
Olympics.  I looked up that email and it say that Dimitri Papaioannou
would be designing and choreographing the ceremonies.  I made the first
cut, but not the next one.  

Stage Technologies has a great piece of software called Visual Creator
that allows the creation of a 3D simulation of multi axis flights.  This
software, running on Nomad controller, them creates the flying effect
based on the programmed paths and speed. It is a pretty advanced system.
Charlie and I saw a demonstration of the software in London last week.
Something like this might have been used for the flying in Athens.

I will look into it.

If the flames are burning in a normal oxygen level atmosphere, the amount
of CO produced is very minimal.  If your ventilation is good, and the
theater space isn't tiny, I'd not expect the CO detectors to go off.  The
usual precautions with open flames in a theatrical environment should also
be taken.  I'd also suggest multiple ignitors to ensure that the gas is
reliably ignited when the valve is opened.
    Consult with your local fire inspector on the design of the gag, and
run a couple of tests with him/her present and no general public in the
venue.

Hmmmm  sorry - the 'Audio & Video' link was full of opening vids a few days ago 
- I guess they update it ;-)

Google is your friend.  I too have been browsing some of the rental
companies lately, and since I'm too lazy to write down the addresses of the
various companies, I just google the words 'backdrop' and 'rentals' and up
come a dozen great companies such as Kenmark, Tobins Lake, Cobalt Studios,
and of course Grosh.

Subject: Little Shop Souvenir

Hey, All,

I'm in a bit of a bind, and I need some help. 

You may know that "Little Shop of Horrors" is closing its Broadway run on 
Sunday the 22nd.  That being the case, the broadwaystore.com site has 
run out of the souvenir mugs from that show, and won't be getting any 
more.  My seven-year-old son, who has been saving to get the mug, is now 
looking for an alternate source.  Does anyone know of another site to buy 
the mug?  It's his favorite show, and he's really been looking forward to 
this.   He's even planning to be Seymour for Halloween, complete with 
plant puppet, ala the WSKID scene.  

We've tried ebay, even with misspellings, tried a google search, tried the 
show's website, all to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: more moon

Thanks to everybody who wrote about doing the moon, and I thought for 
general information (and for the guy who has to make a new moon!) I'd 
tell you what we finally did. We didn't use fluorescents because the 
dimmer ballasts were too expensive, though in terms of intensity that 
gave the best results. Instead we  used tubular incandescent lamps that 
look like fluorescents but give a much warmer color. These are called 
Ralina (Radium) and come in 60W half a meter long, or 120W a meter long 
(which looks like two 60W pieces strung together). The intensity is like 
any incandescent but because they're long they give a wonderfully 
diffuse effect, no unevenness as we had from the regular incandescents. 
Also because the color's warm we got good results when using a red gel 
over them.

They are 220V, but I imagine there's a US equivalent - somebody emailed 
me from the list in fact that he used them, his were Osram Linestra - 
and thank you very much, Andy Champ-Doran, for pointing me in that 
direction! Shows me not for the first time what a wonderful resource 
this list is.
