He pointed out, as you do, that the 'adaptive reuse' of set pieces was prevalent. One of the perks of going to State-Run Colleges in Southern California was THAT class, as well as Mike Westmore teaching Make-Up Design, Donald Dortort (Producer of 'Bonanza') teaching Television Production, a MAJOR Cinematographer from one studio teaching Cinematography, the head of the Lighting Department of another teaching Cinematic Lighting Design (yes, Design, not Gaffer-work), the Editor of 'Green Acres' showing us editing techniques, hands-on with Moviolas (we could then tune in a few days later and watch on TV how he edited the episode) and other Oscar and Emmy-winners teaching their specialties, all for under $20 per unit! The key to getting these people was that there were student assistants to take roll and perform all the administrative tasks, so all the professional had to do was to show up and show us the tricks of the trade one night a week for 18 weeks or so. One of the most startling events happened one night at a Cinematography class, when we walked in the studio to discover over a dozen 35mm Panavision camera packages with full lens kits and all accessories set up, so each student could work 'hands on' a separate camera. At the time, the complete camera packages were insured for $250,000+ EACH (Panavision only rents equipment- the cameras were not for sale). This 'name' instructor apparently called in a few favors, and the students were the beneficiaries. /s/ Richard > One of my favorite 'inspirational' books is called > "Screen Deco," and highlights a lot of Cedric > Gibbons' grand Hollywood sets. Same with the other designers. As one of them rightly pointed out, you need a string of films, all consistently good, to make a great designer.
