I have to say that this show is intense, it is toured all over the upper Midwest and does have its challenges. I was looking for an easy solution to the shootings. Also, there is no Stage Manager to call cues for the show. We go off the script. It does get a little difficult to time the "gunshots"... BTW, I like the MIDI trigger idea, followed by the RF trigger. Just hopping in here... What would the problem be, with a sound effect gun shot, if the speaker was hidden in the set in close proximity to the "shot" itself, say behind the actor in a book shelf? I am sure that there is one for most needs without you have to invent a new one. That being said, there are a surprisingly large number of knots still being 'invented' today. Surprising, in that their use is not documented elsewhere (hence invented, although who knows who may have used the knot unknowingly through application of knot theory) despite people using knots as far back as who knows, and also because they're relatively simple knots. One example is Blake's knot, which is a friction hitch used by arborists attributed to Jason Blake. The constrictor knot is supposed to have been invented by Ashley himself, and that has theatrical uses. There are conventions and guilds for knot enthusiasts where new knots are continually shown. OK, as much as I like knots, I haven't gone to one of these. Yet. If one is going to correct spelling (Prussic vs. Prussik), the prusik knot is named for Dr. Karl Prusik, and was invented in 1931. Pretty easy to check with Google or any of a number of knot books. Better yet, don't bother unless someone asks for the help; if they do, at least get it right. And finally, anyone know how to tie an icicle hitch, or have pictures? It's also relatively new (20th c.), and named because it's supposed to cinch down tight enough to hold if tied to an icicle. - Jim Dougherty ATD, Middlebury College Theatre Department ------------------------------ Message-ID: <000401c4975d$0d617520$a8a44481 [at] rcarovil> From: "Rob Carovillano" References: Subject: Pyrotech Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2004 13:38:52 -0400 I am looking for a Philadelphia certified Pyrotechnician. Not being Stateside, I don't have quite so many problems with pyro legislation here in the UK (though we still operate to strict safety guidelines). However, from years of listening to guys on here and rats talk about the regs over there I'd say that 'experience' would be based on formal training and regular work with a tech who IS certified. And I'm not surprised you can't get certified on the basis of your firefighting credentials - great though those may be, it's not necessarily pertinent to knowing all of the relevant regs and procedures of operating flash kit. Hello All,

I  will soon be starting work on a box set that needs to be able to shrink, grow and generaly distort in a skewed sort of way. My current plan is to build the entire thing out of lycra, attaching the corners via tie-line to strategically placed pulleys in order to shrink/grow the walls. My questions are:

 - Does anyone have experience working with this kind of material?

 - Can anyone explain the difference between two-way spandex and lycra?

 - Can it be painted without impeeding its ability to stretch, or will I need to stick to dyes?

 - Is a surger the only way to stitch panels together/finish the edges, or is there a simpler alternative?

 - Does anyone know of a good Mid-West distributer for this material in large formats?

 - Is there anything that first time lycra users like myself should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for your advice

But was Blake the inventor of this knot? This same knot was also described in a January 1991 article by Heinz Prohaska, and the knot is sometimes called a Prohaska knot. I do not know if someone else invented it earlier - I would say that there is a good possibility, but it is not document. Geoffrey Budworth does include Blake's hitch in his book, so this is a well known and documented knot. Blake's hitch, for those who are curious, is a variation on a Prusik (yes, this is the correct spelling) knot. You are correct that it would be easy to come up with many "new" knots, since many knots are just variations of older knots. For example: What do you call a Blake hitch that has one additional wrap than Blake used? Answer: Anything you want, because as far as I know, it would be a "new" knot. Coming up with "new" knots is fun (and takes a lot of research to prove that it is a "new" knot). But, before you start trying to invent new knots, you probably need to know an awful lot of the old one. The only knot guild that I know of is in England. If you know of any in the USA, let me know. Icicle hitch: Yes, I know how to tie an icicle hitch, but it is a very difficult hitch to tie (especially with a long rope) and not one that I really use. Brion Toss describes it in his book, THE COMPLETE RIGGER'S APPRENTICE. This hitch will not slip, even if tied around a tampered beam (I'm not sure about an icicle). If you send me your fax number, I will fax you the drawings and description of how to tie it. -Delbert ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2004 15:48:16 -0400 From: IAEG [at] aol.com Subject: Re: storm Message-ID: <70AAC1EE.7C1FD040.00002B9E [at] aol.com> What was the hint from the last 30 years of practically no hurricanes on the Florida Gulf Coast then ? Does anyone know where I might find any documentation for a LeeColortran Dimension192 dimmer rack? I think the fan in mine has gone sneakers up. I'd love to have more info=20 on the rack before I tear into it and explore. I would recommend asking this on the VW support forum on their website. VW folks monitor the forum and most likely have a solution. We are going to hasten slowly on this one and give the job a miss. Instead we will build up a working system with your suggested air knives here in our draughty 10,000 sq foot warehouse. Which companies/organizations have the coolest shirts/SWAG? So far I have noticed wears from the AES and USA 829. I saw one motion picture editors guild IA shirt. I've previously donned a mackie shirt (hey, it was free, and yes it did wear out before my other, higher quality clothes). -- Mat Goebel Entertainment Technical Services Paramount's Great America Cell: 510.693.1448 ------------------------------ From: Subject: RE: borderlining on OT: t-shirts Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2004 05:44:27 -0400 Message-ID: In-Reply-To: I used to share with my ex a t-shirt from Varilite that said on the back "Life is a freakshow, we just do the lighting."
