Since every third page of my book on optics has Fresnel's name in it 
(usually attached to equations) I knew this couldn't be true, so I 
checked it out. Fresnel is one of the most important scientific figures 
who investigated light. He did a lot of mathematical calculation and 
experiment on light. He was convinced it was a wave in a time when most 
people thought it was particles, and his work did a lot to convince 
others. He did both theoretical and experimental work on diffraction and 
other wave phenomena. And he died when he was only 39!

And here is a quote from the webpage which makes him sound like a great 
guy (well worthy of immortalization in the theatre...)

and amusements and working to the point of exhaustion. Despite the

held tenaciously to his convictions and defended them with courage and 
vigour. ... he voiced outrage when the behaviour of others fell short of

Maybe it was the size, total square feet of reflector, or in this
case, lack of size??  I once read a Sci-Fi story in which a South
American socer stadium with about 60,000 people, at high noon in
summer, all tried to blind the ref after a bad call by using the
mirror like plastic back of their programs to reflect the sun into his
eyes.  The result was the ref was instantly vaporized.  What that had
to do with the story I don't remember, the thought of the gimmick was
obviously more interesting than the story.

They did say they raised the temp to, what was it, 200F??  Maybe
another row of reflectors would do it? I'm not up on thermo dynamics,
I wonder if adding reflecting area would raise the heat potential in a
linier or expotential manner??

    There was a solar power experimental plant that used this idea back
in the 70s.  Black body boiler up on a tower, in the middle of a field of
steerable mirrors.  They got it up to quite high temperatures, but the
thing wasn't commercially viable.  No idea if it still exists.
