Dry Cut vs. Abrasive Saw for Metal In-reply-to: Message-id: References: Steve-- We have had the Jepson for a number of years now. The noise is comparable to an abrasive saw, a bit more shrill, and depending on the number of tooth fillings you may have, perhaps a bit more irritating but by no means overwhelming. Hearing protection is still recommended. When the blade dulls, or breaks a tooth or two, it throws a respectable amount of sparks. It does favor a bit more finesse by the operator, especially when cutting thinner stock. The saw should be eased through the vertical legs of square tubing for example. Definitely buy an extra blade, and budget for re-sharpening. W/o a sharp blade the thing is not particularly special. The advantages over the abrasive saw are more accurate cuts (no burr or burning with a reasonably sharp blade), sharp miters, you can cut threaded rod w/o having to chase the threads afterwards, and shave off that 1/32" of stock for a perfect fit. The Jepson is a pretty cheap tool, perhaps a domestic brand may be a bit more solidly built and make less noise. I have replaced the blade guard handle when a student pushed too hard on it while the guard was not free to move, and the entire guard when it got bent by a short cut off piece that was jammed into it by the blade. Despite it's shortcomings, for a low volume shop like ours that cuts mostly lightweight stock, I'd definitely buy another one. Of course a cold saw would be my first choice if I had the money and the amount of work to justify the purchase. Cosmo > This comes down to which do you recommend? The difference to me is like that between cutting a mortise with a chisel or a screwdriver. ... okay, a really sharp screwdriver. They're both loud and they both throw crap everywhere, but the dry cut is faster and more accurate and gives a finer cut.
