The fake is very wet, ok in a glass or flower vase as cracked ice but on lose on stage. Since getting information,(let alone contact information) is like molasses flowing uphill in winter, I figured I would give a shout here. If any one is getting the show and has any idea who I should talk to at a particular venue could you please give me a holler. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Oct 2004 10:37:52 -0500 Subject: Radios From: Tom Hull Message-ID: Ladies and Gents, I am looking at purchasing a new set of radios for our theatre space. I am interested in a multi channel radio or the like. I would also like your collected advice on what type of communication tools that you use. I am also interested if any of you use Nextel type phones with a two/+ radio feature. Ultimately I would love to purchase a dozen communicator badges, but those aren't out just yet. I really enjoy the 2 way feature of Nextel phones. But I don't think they are a solution for show situations. To use direct connect you must select a user and send an "alert". That user would then recieve the audible or vibrate alert, see who is connecting and choose to talk or ignore it all together. So...... beep beep.... "Yes?"..... beep beep..... "Go cue"...not so good. But they are really handy during the day when you are running around the complex like a madman. No need for a big ass radio hanging on your belt. The second factor is money. Running a Nextel phone is expensive. We use them ( at our own expense) because paying for a bargan cell phone that won't ring where you spend the majority of your life is a waste. Nextel is the only provider that does not drop coverage in my theater. I have taken calls in our basement dimmer room. The extra expense is worth it to me for the comfort of knowing my family can reach me if there are problems. New information for me included the fact that they were apparently doing the event in some kind of multi-use ballroom, not intended to be (at least primarily) a performance space, which would explain having a slippery floor that you worry about marking up. Also, that the technicians in question were not trained professionals or employees of the PAC, but college kids and others willing to work for substandard wages. And, perhaps most importantly, that no one from the PAC seemed to have any idea what was going on in there. You mention that in your PAC, you have no control over who the groups that rent your facilities hire to do their technical work. You seem to have some measure of control, in that you can prevent someone from using a house lift if you feel that they are not qualified. Is that just in terms of who may use house equipment? If they bring in their own equipment (or something borrowed from another theater in town), then they can do whatever they want? Do you not have any say in what equipment they can bring in and use in your hall? Do you have any regulations on what they can hang overhead, for instance? As you state, and I agree, people experienced with using an A-frame ladder would have known better than to lean too far, have someone up on a ladder with no one footing it, or attach towels to the feet expressly so that it would be more slippery. I'm just suprised that your building doesn't have any oversight of what your rental groups are doing. Do you have no liability concerns there? How do you manage that? I would think that even if you cannot dictate who they hire, you would have some say in requiring whoever they bring in to follow safe working practices, and would have someone from the building detailed to keeping an eye on their activities. I think that unless your building comes up with some kind of policies on these matters, they are setting themselves up for a liability nightmare, and indeed, the "cautionary tale" that this episode represents is maybe less about how not to be an idiot with an A-frame, and more about how some oversight and regulation of rental groups in the facility might be a really really good idea. If I were the IATSE BA in your area, I'd probably be in the office trying to convince them that it would be wise to contract the IA for all the stagework in the hall rather than risk more incidents like this in the future, with perhaps worse outcomes than a chipped tooth.
