This could be worse - I once worked with a dance group touring through 
here, and the LD insisted on having all 6 HMI fresnels and another batch 
of incandescent 5K fresnels on full during the hours of class and 
rehearsal!  At first I thought he was trying out a cue, but when an hour 
went by, I realized it was to keep it warm and bright. When I asked if 
it was necessary he made believe he couldn't understand English , and I 
had to pull out my high school French - big mistake, because after that 
the entire troupe kept talking to me in French!

You probably need to install QuickTime.  Do a custom install and make =
sure
you install quick draw along with the other export options.  You may =
need to
install QuickTime off the original VW cd if you still have problems with =
the
latest version that you can download from Apple.

In the past I have had issues with exporting VW files to images if
there were layers of different scales on or present in the drawing.
Specifically the issue cropped up when a border/title block layer was
at 1:1 scale and the rest of the drawing was at 1/4" scale.  I can't
remember if it occurred with layers that were closer in scale (say
1/4" and 1" compared to 1/4" and 1:1).

It's been a while since I've done it, but I believe the fix was to
either turn the 1:1 layer off, create a new file and delete the
offending layer(s), or to make sure that there were no layers that had
drastic scale differences.

I have had that exact problem.  I got around it by exporting as a .bmp and 
then saving it as a .jpeg.

Secondary schools: 
1. Agreed, it is typical of too many high schools in this country. In need
of complete renovation, top to bottom. 
2.Replace the pit? So, I am speculating that you have an orchestra pit, and
you would like or want it to be replaced, redone, renovated? Is it just a
pit, or does it have an orchestra lift? Is it functional? There are several
companies, good ones that is, who do the entire orchestra pit and lift
scene, and if you want to contact me off line I can recommend several ....
but only several. Your call. 
3.If you desire and can replace the fly system, in my opinion, that is a
good idea. There are several schools and a dichotomy to go with them, of
thought about schools and rigging systems. My opinion, is that automatic is
the way to go. Much safer in the long and short haul, just my opinion,. 
And in California there are several decent and excellent outfits, again,
contact me off line. 
4. In California you will need, esp. at public schools, a licensed rigging
contractor, and I urge you to be extremely careful here in your selection.
Very, very careful. If you wish to discuss this, call me or email me direct,
if you wish. There are several, and I mean at least two who are excellent
and who will do a quality job, and there are others who you do not want to
touch, in my opinion, just based on experience, et al. 
5. Like all consultants and interested people, I do not sell equipment of
any kind, I would be interested in helping, but that is your prerogative,
and we would be pleased to point you in several directions, if you wish. 
You know how to reach me, I expect, and like any consultant, willing to work
with you. 
5. Keep in mind the seismic conditions of any new rigging system in
California, and the need for structural engineering to sign off on them, as
well as state inspectors.

It's good to be back!
So, let's start with the fun.  Our theater (High School), has finally
realized that it is time to do some work on our main stage.  There are some
few basic things that need to be done, replace the pit, replace the
electrical system, and a few other things (all easy sells).  But the one
that I think really needs to be done is the whole fly system.  It is nearly
45 years old, and the only thing replaced on the fly system was the hemp
based rope about 20 years ago, to a synthetic.  I know that old purchase
line systems are a dying breed, and I think most places have replaced them.
So my question (Dr. Doom), what can you all direct me for finding
information on about replacing this, specifically within Cal-Osha, legal
requirements, etc.  We are not ready to bring an inspector on site yet, this
is just a preliminary thing, but I want to come armed for this one, since it
will most likely be the most expensive part, and nobody except me
understands the importance of this one.  In my dream world, I would like to
add about 5 line sets, make them all mechanical, and possible tie them in
with some kind of show control system.  The ADA requirements are being
handled outside the scope of this group.  Oh yeah, and the meeting is
Monday..

Ah, if only it were the case that no consultant was also a vendor.  We'd
have fewer people specifying the equipment they want to sell and more =
people
specifying the equipment the theatre really needs.

Be vewy vewy careful when you try to convince an
administration that your fly system is dangerous
and/or outdated and that the replacement will be
expensive. Because they have an alarming tendency to
want to just remove the "dangerous" present system
without necessarily replacing it with the expensive
new one. Sometimes they say that they are planning to
do so at some later time. Some of them probably even
do so, eventually.

Pardon my dimness, but what do you mean by a "purchase
line system"? A hemp and sandbag thing? A
counterweight system without automation? What?

What is specifically outdated and/or dangerous about
your fly system, other than the 20 year old synthetic
rope on the purchase lines, and presumably, old rope
or wire rope on your lift lines? All of it? Some of
it? Do you NEED automated linesets, or do you just
want them? What kind of system do "most places" have
that you want? Is there a middle ground between the
minimum of replacing old rope and the maximum of added
linesets and automation? You might want to offer
options in your pitch. And an inspection by someone
familiar with your local codes before the fact might
help tell you (and them) what the minimum should be
and the maximum could be. Perhaps the minimum that you
should be pushing for is to have such an inspection,
with a promise to seriously consider doing what that
inspection recommends.

This is just opinion, of course, but I find the
apparent fondness for automated linesets in
educational settings troubling. I realize that it
makes a certain amount of sense with largely untrained
operators, but I worry that we'll have a generation of
stagehands who don't understand how a counterweight
fly system works.
